While undertaking a formal and aesthetic exploration, architect Luciano Pia sought a structure that would meet stringent thermal and acoustic standards. The building embodies two distinct characteristics. The first is a pursuit of beauty realized through the manipulation of shapes: an elliptical core facing the street and irregularly shaped windows with zinc cladding on the rear facade.
During the planning phase for Pedro, a detailed graphic opening simulation was necessary for each window. These windows, featuring more than four sides, none of which were parallel or orthogonal, posed a unique challenge. The solution involved a series of aluminum tilt-and-turn windows equipped with low-emissivity and acoustic glazing.
The main façade, facing south, reveals a greater complexity. The daytime areas of the units are enclosed by a double-skin transparent envelope, supported by a metal structure that, juxtaposed to the building, imparts curvature to the final volume.
This system creates an external ventilated cavity that, during the summer, draws in fresh air from the central part of the lot. Subsequently, it channels this air into a double floor, passively dissipating excess energy through the openings in the façade. Simultaneously, it protects the interior from street noise. Accessible and walkable sunshade grilles reduce direct radiation and facilitate the passage of rising air.
This solution also allows for the creation of bioclimatic greenhouses inside, where it is possible to establish winter gardens accessible directly from the residential units. During the winter season, double glazed windows limit heat loss to the outside, while simultaneously harnessing a portion of energy from direct radiation.
